    Wheatland Music Organization Awards Scholarships

Remus -- Wheatland Music Organization is accepting scholarships applications for 2007 traditional arts activities.
    The nonprofit, whose mission is
to preserve and present traditional arts, began awarding scholarships nearly two decades ago
in memory of an associate member.
The Elyce Fishman Scholarship Fund, supported by an annual allocation and donations
from the public, celebrates Elyce's life by making it possible for youth and adults to enhance their personal growth,
experiences, and education related to the traditional arts.

Scholarships are awarded to those striving to improve their skills in the areas of traditional music, dance, arts and crafts.
Traditional arts includes skills and techniques “learned person to person, passed from one generation to the next,
influenced by culture, family, ethnicity, and era.”  Examples of traditional music are old time, bluegrass,
    cajun
, french canadian, great lakes, celtic, tribal, swing, tejano, and western music; dance - clogging, cajun, celtic, step dance
and folkdance and folk performance arts such as poetry, puppetry and storytelling.  Traditional arts can include crafts
such as stone building, snow shoe making, pottery, basket making, quilling, bead work, wood carving and more.
It is the intention of the Wheatland Music Organization, Inc. to assist those with the greatest financial need and/or
the greatest potential for growth ‑ but all applications will receive equal consideration.

    CALENDAR FOR MICHIGAN

    Mecosta: http://www.mecostaonline.com/rivermusic.html

Michigan is home to more than one hundred ethnic groups, and the exhibit focuses on some of their contributions to Michigan's foodways -- pasties, cudighi, coneys, and paczki, to mention just a few. Local foodways events, sometimes based in an ethnic or religious tradition, also pepper the state -- sauerkraut suppers, fish fries, and pow wows. In such cases the culture, history, and meaning of the foods are emphasized.
